Arseshirts RIP, Adebayor good riddance!

Blow me down, the boy’s on his way!

After a little break away from the internet and blogging, I return to find the world of transfers has gone off its rocker, with Emmanuel Adebayor on his way to Citeh. What’s more, we look to have milked his price tag for all its worth.

Only, erm, he hasn’t yet, having stalled on Citeh’s offer over a) his wages or b) the perception in Togo over how much he would be getting payed or c) both.

The wages on offer, mind you, are reportedly anywhere between £130,000 to £170,000 per week. Not loose change by any stretch, certainly.

This blog has been lambasted on a number of occassions – once upon a time, I stood by Adebayor, much to the chagrin of many commentators who saw him as little more than an egotistical donkey who got lucky with the service given to him in 2007/08.

Not hours after that interview in that link, he contradicted himself, hawking his backside to the Beyonce of AC Milan and who knows who else, in the hopes of a lucrative transfer or a big fat pay rise from Arsenal. He got the latter and I felt betrayed from a player I had come to really enjoy watching.

So I thought – fine: if he can continue to do what he did in 07/08 regardless of the twit he had become, fine. At least he’s doing a job.

Only, the money went to his head, he lost all semblance of effort playing for us and by now, we all know how the rest finishes.

Of course, the minute I criticise the guy for those very reasons, having seen the error of my ways, another group of pro-Ade supporters show up where they never showed up before, accusing me of things like racism and other such rot.

Arsenal can only win from this transfer – Citeh may benefit from a rejuvenated Adebayor as well – but what matters to us is Arsenal and we benefit by a handsome sum of £25million or so.

Monies to fund a central midfielder, perhaps another defender, perhaps another striker.

But seriously – this fella is really one for the record books in sheer, mind-numbing crassness.

Is he really worried about what his beloved native Togo thinks of his earning a rediculous sum of money per week? Was he not concerned already when earning 35,000 or 80,000 at Arsenal in seasons before?

In another blog post I wrote today for the ABC, I briefly mention Adebayor in the scope of Manchester City, but also another prominent footballer who just proves that most of these players live in a perverse little bubble obscured by unbelievable pots of cash.

The rest of us are hanging onto our meagre 1000-2000 per week jobs in the midst of recession. Some are even lucky to earn half that.

Coming from South Africa, I know a number of degrees of poverty – in Togo, I can assure you it’s even worse.

The man Adebayor cannot be further disenfranchised from his country of birth than he is now.

What’s frightening from an Arsenal perspective is that the distance between Adebayor and the nation of Togo is not even half of the distance most Arsenal fans now want to be from the lanky, selfish plank.

Adebayor – I say good riddance to you.

Arseshirts goes belly up

There is other news about the Chamakh deal being held up by Bordeaux’s Silvestastic demands and us being linked with Klaas van Huntelaar, but I’ll let NewsNow and other blogs take care of those.

One thing that has yet to be mentioned is the very, very sudden closure of the fantastic partner of this site and it’s upcoming eMag, PORTAL, which was unpleasant news for me to come back to since getting back home.

Arseshirts has been around for a number of years now and due to certain legal issues, has been forced to close. My personal knowledge of what happened with Jamie Sanderson a while back leads me to believe it’s something to do with copyright and Arsenal PLC Ltd, but I’m sure Arseshirt’s management will reveal details soon.

It’s a sad loss to a brilliant entrepeneur who provided many Arsenal fans with some excellent merchandise, though I know for a fact he has a good project already lined up. Still, Arseshirts will be missed not just by me but by many that were cool enough to buy the gear.

A sad loss – one that will be missed much more than any Togolese striker.

I’m off to Sydney for a week – if I can update, I will, but I cannot make any promises. Thank you as always for reading.
