Why Barca may never pay for Cesc’s tapping up
They’re at it again – the Barcelona sporting director has spoken of Cesc’s genetic structure as Barca’s property once more, and all the while Arsenal fans simply roll their eyes.
It’s a sad state of affairs, protested most eloquently by Wrighty7, and something we’re already half-used to living with. But frankly, there are a handful of reasons why Barcalona ‘more than a club’ FC will never get the book thrown at them for blatant tapping up.
The first reason is that, as of this moment in time, they’re not actually tapping Cesc up, according to the law. The appropriate legislation stipulates that ‘agents of a player’ cannot make an approach to a club, and vice-versa, should that player be legally registered to another team.
The textbook scenario was when Peter Kenyon and Jose Mourinho, both formerly of Chelsea, met Arsenal leftback Ashley Cole in a hotel to discuss a potential transfer to the west London club.
It was an actual, physical meeting between the two parties while the player was definitely under contract.
Where that backs Barcalona out, unfortunately, is that they are neither approaching Cesc Fabregas, nor do they often use an official representative of the club to do the dirty deed.
Sure, they use the odd player like Xavi or Puyol to say nice things about the Arsenal captain and Bergaristain is the sporting director, but it’s all done through the club’s mouthpiece in the Spanish press. The press will do the hard yards for the club’s board and add speculative poison to the waters, in a bid to sway the player’s head in their direction.
So while we may be screaming for FIFA or UEFA to step in and do something, their inaction may be down to legal futility, rather than some continental bias towards the Spanish champs.
But bias could still be a major factor, too. Arsenal, as a club, really are caught between a rock and a hard place with regards to their status in Europe.
Not only do they make quite a bit of money in the affluent English Premier League, but it has yet to win the Champions League. As a result, they remain an English club, unpopular in certain circles of UEFA’s administration, and at the same time have no gravitas compared to Barca, or even Celtic (see the Eduardo case study).
Overriding the whole mess is a growing cynacism amongst fans that this sort of thing is just the done thing in the dirty world of football. Who else here uses the very same media tactics in games like Football Manager to swing a player round to your cause? It’s just too effective for a club of Barca’s scale to ignore.
Ultimately, the ball remains in Arsenal’s court. Yes, Fabregas is tied to the longest ever contract signed in the Premier League and would command an enormous fee were Barcelona to buy him off our books.
But even so, the need to win trophies, as expressed by Ivan Gazidis, becomes more apparent if we are to keep our top players. Cliches are sometimes just overstated truths – while Fabregas owes his career to Arsene Wenger, there is a visible degree of happiness when he plays for his national team.
Arsenal themselves have all the potential and all the skill you can throw a box of kittens at. But the time to convert that into a league or cup win is becoming all the more pressing.

You forgot the other complicit party in all this…the British press. They’re so eager to see Cesc leave and to trumpet Arsenal’s demise because of his departure that they’ll reprint every fart and wink that Sport cares to publish. That, more than what’s actually said in Spain causes us Arsenal supporters to have continuing frustration with this matter. If the British press at least dealt with all the comments coming from Spain in a fair manner, instead of constant, roaring headlines announcing Cesc’s imminent departure, I think most Gooners would relax a bit over things.
Having said that, you’re correct in noting that winning a trophy would go a very long way towards shutting a lot of people up. So…it’s all left to do for AW and the lads.
The same thing happened to Reyes and R.Madrid. They were constantly talking about him and publicly tapping him up then some spansih journalist phoned him up and pretended to be the Madrid president and recorded the whiole conversation and broadcast it in Spain. Reyes had to leave after that and his career has fgone down the toilet, which is sad because he was a quality player. The probelm is that in Spain there are tow sport papers that clarly support Barca and Madrid (Sport and Marca) and they are always trying to link, approach and make moves for players they want at their respective clubs. Arsenal dont have that sort of media machine but maybe we should get one!!
Slow news week eh?
The story is sustained by Barca officials, Arsenal bloggers & British hacks. It’s so tedious that I wonder what gains there are to be found in the stories.
Did you ever stop to question why a similar thing is not being attempted for say Messi or even Rafael Marques at Barca. The answer is pretty simple. Barca are treble winners and are perhaps the best club to play for. there is nothing (other than inflated salaries may be) that clubs can offer to lure players away. So if arsenal are to hang on to Cesc, we need to win something.
and another reason is, cesc is a barca boy!! haha
i hope arsenal wont win anything this year so that cesc will finally come back home..
Barcelona are certainly the best side in Europe at the moment so I really don’t see why they need Fabrigas. My guess is, they see Arsenal as a growing threat and the best way to stop that threat is to relieve them of their best players. They’ve done it before with Henry, Hleb, Overmars and Petit. None of those players improved after leaving Arsenal, in fact, they spent more time on the bench than playing football.
So Cesc beware, Barca don’t give a monkey about your career. Just so long as they can weaken the opposition then probably pack you off to Stuttgart on loan or the like.

The situation at Barcelona reminds me of my boyhood days. I used to have a collection of toys so huge that i couldnt care less if someone else took it. But when i would see a younger cousin play with it and having a great time … I would be jealous. I WANT MY TOY BACK EVEN IF I HAVE TO SHOVE IT IN THE CUPBOARD. Thats exactly what is happening in Catalunia. If Barca really appreciated the talent they had,Cesc would not have been at Arsenal. They didnt let go of MEssi. Now that we have worked hard on him and improved him they see the BARCA DNA. I like the way BARCA play but really their conduct is very unprofessional. As for Cesc staying or going it is his decision but i am sure he could be a legend if he stays here like Henry but if he goes he could end up like Anelka.
