Cana’s Sunderland signing sparks lemming invasion
A quick note on Vieira and Spurs
If there’s one reason I cannot wait for the season to start, it’s that NewsNow and other directories will be flooded with match reports, player interviews and other such nonsense, as opposed to the constant headline wars by 14-year-olds trying to outdo each other with incendiary titles.
While I’ve blogged on Lorik Cana and had some fun imagining him in an Arsenal shirt from nothing more than youtube clips (a full, frank admission), I am never going to get worked up on him signing for a mediocre team that proves none of the bigger clubs were interested.
Especially for a (relatively) paltry £5million.
But the panic and absolute hatred towards Arsene Wenger thrown his way from blogs I’m sure most of us are aware of is hilarious, especially given the soon-to-be-released PORTAL has a whole section devoted to this sort of ‘commentary’.

It’s stemmed from a number of things, like categorizing certain Arsenal fans definitively as those who love the manager and those ‘with an open mind’ – it’s all politics meant to divide the fanbase and the club, killing portions of the atmosphere at the ground and increasing negativity throughout.
The truth is, no-one, apart from those who actually do watch Ligue-1 (and no, the blog responsible for so much of this ‘panic’ does not watch the French league despite his claims) and from all accounts, we are not missing out on much.
The whole furore arises from the fact nobody really has any names they can come up with that are well known that would really fit into central midfield.
They bring up players like Cana, like Yaya Toure, like De Rossi, etc, all of whom are either not up to it or never were available.
Despite this, Wenger is hung, drawn and quartered for ’sitting on his hands’, being a cheapskate or just plain stubborn when the grim reality is he has his hands tied financially.
So we all jump, like lemmings from a cliff in front of Heavens Gate, knowing we’re doomed to a life below the forever-ambitious Tottenham Hotspur.

The money from Adebayor’s sale – showing his class by now trying to tap Kolo Toure up – will more than likely go into debt restructuring. That’s the future of the club right there, like it or not.
Maybe it means it will be a decade before we win another league title – that cannot be helped. Destiny is destiny and no fan is going to change that without resorting to bloodshed and hostage taking.
The club is 123-years-old and has won the league 13 times. That’s a league once every 10 years, give-or-take and any expectations above that are being generated from teenagers and newcomers unaware to the realities of football.
Wenger’s done things on a shoe-string budget before and he will probably continue doing so. It’s just the reality of our situation, not by any stubborn streak of his but because of the situation a self-sustained club like Arsenal has had to be.
It’s honourable, it’s something to be proud of as a club. It’s frustrating, yes, compared to the bubble other clubs are living in.
But I cannot and will not tolerate the slanderous attacks the manager, a personal hero of mine, gets from ungrateful fans who are expecting him to work miracles no other manager could hope to attain with Arsenal.
The club is going through a financial period hampered by the recession. This is coupled with the fact that we’re all expecting so much from the club after Wenger set the bar higher than anyone else could or will.
I really fear the day one of the greatest managers of all time leaves the club. Who would you want him to be replaced with? Mourinho? Ancelotti? David Moyes?
They would be all be neuters compared to Wenger, who found his club in Arsenal and left an indelible mark on it.
I’m not saying Wenger is immune from constructive criticism. He himself criticises what he does and analyses to a great degree.
I’m saying that the sheer temerity of fans duped by the 24/7 news-cycle demanding his head for not buying overrated, overpriced players is not worth the attention it is getting.
To those jumping on the bandwagon – you’re part of something very, very sickening.
A quick note on Vieira and Spurs
Just an aside amid the rumours Patrick Vieira is looking to sign with Spurs – I’ve heard displeasure from certain quarters saying it will forever taint his legacy as an incredible Arsenal player and captain.
To which I say, it will a bit, but only a bit. We’re all meant to hate Spurs with all our souls and more, etc, but really – this is Vieira we’re talking about, one of our greatest ever players, who just so happens to want to return to the English Premier League.
He’s no longer able to play at the title-challenging level anymore, his legs have left him for good. But he would not want to play for relegation fodder either.
If Spurs are the only team interested, added to the hiatus from Arsenal and England after several long seasons, then the animosity towards the club would have dimmed a bit, from his perspective.
If he joins, then he has my blessings only in so much as he’ll be one of the only players there I hope goes injury free and plays with a smile on the face. He earned our respect from years of stellar service.
I’m not happy with him playing for the Spuddies, but I won’t ever be found booing him or wishing ill on Patrick. I’d hope some share my sentiments to a similar degree.
That’s all for now – cheers for reading.

a good level headed blog
A voice of reason amongst a mass of numpties!
Well said, i was reading the tripe that you were referring to earlier on and i just couldnt be arsed to post a comment telling the guy (you know who you are sinbad) what a complete and utter gobshite he is. It was quite heartening to see that there were quite a few people who did.
The fans and supporters are the 12th man. If we save our energies for supporting the team noisily rather than sniping at them we will give the team more of a boost than that robbie savage-alike Cana ever could.
Dream on, Arsenal fans don't sing and the atmosphere at the Emirates is discraceful for 60,000 fans. You have to go to away games to sing with the real supporters who don't moan about people standing up and getting behind the boys.
So just remember gooners when you are slagging of players for not putting in the effort ask yourself are you?
Excellent analyses on both issues. I am sure the silent (too silent at Emirates it has to be said) majority of Gooners are in full agreement with you.
i cba with arsenal transfers now ill just w8 and see what happens at the start of the season n its not that we hate wenger but some of the comments he comes out with our realy annoying while other clubs r buying players wenger constantly talks about potential and the recession and lets face it we might have a big squad now but we lack quailty in certain areas a speacialy the fringe players of the squad
keep up the great work buddy
nice to read something which is the same as the way i feel
Great post mate – good to atually read something from a propper fan for once. Wenger is a legend and any supporter who cannot see what he has (and still does) bring to this club is not worthy of supporting this great club, which is being managed and run in a way that makes me proud to be a gooner. My only disagreement is that i can see us challenging for the title either this year or next, with or without additions, but i am an eternal optimist.
I never comment on blogs, I just read them all from the seemingly 'anti Wenger' to the so called AKB's. So it's nice to hear the voice of reason, a real Arsenal supporter.
Not bad mate.
Its really interesting that Arsenal fans are suddenly aware that the club has severe financial restrictions when we produce nearly 3million pounds of revenue every home game, the biggest gate receipts in the premiership. With this money along with sponsership deals, merchandise revenue and money from the EPL and sky, we are trading at a very healthy profit after all costs of funding the debt, players wages and tax.
cont…This is further confirmed when Wenger himself confirmed that all of the money received from the sale of Adabayor is available to him!! The truth is, both the Board and Wenger WILL not spend the money as players do not count as an asset on the balance sheet and the shareholders are looking to maximise the clubs NAV (Net Asset Value), so that the book value is optimised when inevitably selling the club. This is all about the Boards greed and f..k the fans and the money they pour into the club every year. Both Wenger and the Board have absolutely no respect for the fans and the club. Live with it because that is reality and all those "In Arsene we trust" sheep need to get a dose of reality. The only people that love the club are a smattering of the players and the fans. This stops short of the managers and custodians of our beloved club. Wenger and tha Board are just pathalogical liers and more fool us for putting up with them!!
David, seriously, take a chill pill and think things over. This is a manager who hardly sees his own wife, he works so bloody hard for the club. As for the board, I doubt you have any insider information to confirm any of that polemic.
To all the commentors above, thanks for the well-wishes and/or criticisms and I'd be glad to hear from you guys more regularly. All are welcome, whether you disagree or agree with my ramblings, so make yourselves at home.
Face the fact, cana choose sunderland over rubbish London
To Jammathon
No need for a chill pill. Its true that Wenger is a workaholic, but for the board, not the club. The club are the fans, and if he worked on their behalf, he wouldnt perenially lie to them would he. As for inside info, I do know someone not to be named who understands the politics within the club. I wish it were different, but it isnt.
cracking blog
This blog has refreshed my day. Level headed and well though out. Congratulations.
I agree with most of what you said.
I would still like to see a new striker and a holding mid at our club.
Sell another player if required, but please spend the money.
fookin’ Quality post mate..
Unfortunately some fans can’t be told, just have to live with them spouting on shite! This is modern day football in afraid, bring back the days of merson I say!
Keep up the good work!
Viva la Wenger!!
SO GLAD TO SEE that the people who I like to call my fellow Gooners always find the right blogs.
Calm, cool and collective. Informed and educated.
Anybody who owns a original Arsenal kit knows it's incripted in the neck with the words: Victoria Concordia Crescit. Meaning: Victory Comes From Harmony.
Wenger is looking for the right balance NOT the right name.

Chose sunderland over london? That would be the most ridicuous choice ever made in the history of time. A choice to play for a shit team and live in the arsehole of britain – you dilluded mate?
Arse(nal)hole of Britain – must be North London then. Difference between me and you pal is I've lived and worked in both Sunderland and N London and I can assure you parts of N London are not fit for human habitation. Which is why you are obviously so happy there. Try travel – broadens the mind (assuming you have one).
the fact is cana's shit and was only wanted by relegation fighters
Cheers AusGunner, Edu 17 and DutchGooner, I hope to see you more often on the site.
You speak pearls of wisdom which are echoed by the mainly silent majority. What Wenger has done and hopefully will continue to do for Arsenal for many years to come is nothing short of miraculous. Let’s back the greatest manager we’ve ever had
I think thats a downright disgrace when a southerner disrespects north-east england. How much time have you spent in the area ?
You will find that most decent north east folk are respectful towards there southern counterparts.
If you dont know a great deal about the natural beauty of Northumberland and north east England then keep your thoughts to yourselves
Lets get the facts right you diluded cockney morons – you live in an overcrowded / over poluted / dump.
Keeping it sane. Thank you!
The Question to all these so called fans that expect success year in year out should be where were you during the early the mid 70's through most of the 80's where we didnt compete for titles? Now im 26 so in my lifetime we have been a successful club but if any REAL supporter thinks we have a devine right to be winning things every year they are delussional. What we should be greatful of is that we are the longest standing team in the top flight, the majority of recent years we at least challenge for a trophy or two and we play attractive football that has won us trophies in recent times.
Its time to get behind and support the team. Adebayor has gone, which is good news as he takes his lazy money grabbing personality with him. Everyone else in this team works for the cause and whether you think they are up to it or not at least the give 100%. So support the team and make yourselves heard down the Grove.
Felling quietly confident about this season.
cana chose blunderland cos no one else was willing to pay 5 millfor an average midfielder.
a good article sritten above. at alst the true fans voice their opinions.
peeps should be carefull i what they ask for, if they kep critisicing Wenger then he will elave and all the tp clubs ineurope will line up to sign him up.
if he leaves us then we will be fuked that is for sure, cos there is no other manager out there who could have kept ARSENAL AT THE TOP FOR MORE THEN A DECADE on the budget that he has had. we now jhave a brand new stadium we have a young vibrant team that plays football that is admired around the world.
the talent that Wenger produces is coveted by all the top teams in europe.
what more do fuking fans want? do they want to watch dire football that the chavs play after spending gazillions.
get real arsenal fans enjoy the time Wenger has left with us cos its all downhill after he leaves.
we can only attract top talent cos of Wenger when he leaves cesc and the others will elave as well.
then we can get an english manager that lead us into mediocrity.
Sunderland fan in relative peace. Agree with your comments on Wenger – a top manager let down only by his pathetic "I didn't see that incident"'s.
Why oh why do you and a number of your posters have to be offensive to Sunderland – the club and the place – while making your pitiful pitch for why you really didn't want the guy. IF you didn't want him then fine – but me thinks you protest too much.
And as for your comment that it s just a measly Millio – didn't Wenger buy a number of your best ever players for 5 mill or less.
Arsenal fans used to have more class.
Don’t tar us all with the same brush Stuart, lets enjoy the season and good luck to Cana and your boys.. Just not against the gunners
I advise anyone who walks the tightrope on our beloved club to go to Arsenal's Wikipedia- the section of the stadiums.
Compare and consider the Gran Canyon leap we have made under AW.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenal_F.C.
Not denying Highbury to the romantics. Not at all, I have vivid memories of our legendary seasons over there. But be fair, what Arsene is building is the foundation of a big club that can stand the test of time. Still pouring concrete.
What the loudest fans are demanding is an erected world wonder, like the Eifel Tower, or the highest building on the planet, or the longest bridge in our Milkyway.
They are living of future glory which minimizes their sense of reality. Marking the maquette as a demandable result within the shortest possible frame. ANd that's fine if your happy with the impression of a GREAT club. Like Chelsea have done and now City is doing;. raising 'a giant' before our very own eyes in one transfer season.
To those fans AW is a construction worker not an architect. Hence the reason they want him gone thinking he's holding up our proudest moments. Oblivious to the fact there is still a lot of ground work to be done before it can carry the weight of our ambitions.
@Jammathon Don't you worry mate, this blog is a permanent blib on my radar.
At last a voice of reason and sense, I couldn't believe the amount of vitriol spouted by that idiots blog! Top blog mate!
And for the Sunderland fans, Indeed the area of Northumberland has some astonishingly beautiful scenery I have family in Tyne Dock, but if you read the post properly he said Cana signed for a mediocre team, and even wearing rose tinted glasses you'd have to agree with him, unless you have sufficient evidence otherwise? oh we know about the '73 cup final as well.
I like what you've said a lot, the only thing I have to say is that I wish Arsene and the board would stop saying money is available if it's not. Don't mention anything about being able to spend if we need to, coz it's obvious we kinda need to, but we can't. I don't demand trophies, I just want us to remain competitive, I remember finishing twelfth and all that bullcrap.
To David from London.
I am content with whats going on at the club. We are in £300 mil debt and that is a fact. Yes, other clubs are in similar debt but what they are doing when they decide to fork out £25 mil on a player, they either have the means to do so (i.e. Abramovich at Chelsea) or are taking financial risks by spending money regardless (last season Liverpool had to restructure their debt for that very reason).
On the other hand we do things differently. We are running a sound financial business model. Wenger has to be one of the few managers who take an interest in the long term stability of the club they are at and whatever insider knowledge you have (lol!) won't change my mind on that; he knows it would be unwise to spend big even though all the noises you hear from our board is that the money is there. If we can still compete with what we have have, (which we have shown we can – getting to the semis of FA cup and Champions League which to many blind, bandwagon Arsenal fans was an absolute disgrace by the way), then as long as we continue decreasing the debt season by season, making a profit I WILL BE HAPPY.
I'm not going to be an Arsenal fan just for the next 2 years where we are unlikely to win the league etc. Many fans can't accept this lack of glory. In 5-10 years we will be at the stage where we are almost completely self-preserving and self-reliant. We will not be in the astronomical debt that United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Madrid and Barcelona etc. are in, which run business models that are the complete antithesis of what Arsenal do.
These teams only have the capacity to sustain themselves, to service their debt, requiring the trophy revenue to survive. I wonder what might happen if United were to go trophyless for 2 seasons? Would they still be able to pay off the interest or would it require further loans? Or might they eventually crumble like Leeds did?
If I were to ask a hundred Arsenal fans whether they would have what Man Utd have, that is great success but a very unpredictable financial situation or a continuation of Arsene Wenger's long term plans, I really dont know what the responses would be. I know what I would go for and I believe there would be many more by the sounds of the comments on this site that would concur. I fear however, many of the short sighted, bandwagon fans, who look enviously over at Chelsea and United, would take that risky option without hesitation.
I am happy to see Arsenal achieve their seasonal targets of qualification for the Champions League (I think it is too early for City to really threaten us when they lack a cohesive defensive unit) and not do anything spectacular. We will continue achieving our revenue objectives so that we won't be in any doubt of our financial security in the years to come.
As somebody said earlier, Viva la Wenger!

It's getting to the stage where the bed-wetting brigade are starting to do real damage to the club.
Unfortunately it's no longer about freedom of speech, it's now about self defence of our club.
It's time to drive these showers out before they do irreparable damage t o Arsenal.
Despite their rather dubious claims of several centuries of supporting Arsenal and having season tickets since the rindepest, no amount of money brought in by them could nullify the damage they bring.
Drive them out, the club does not need them, they bring no value to Arsenal.
Cana is class and expect him to help Sunderland go one better next year and beat Arsenal at the Emirates.
Wenger is a great Manager but it is true he is more loyal to the Board than the fans. He should spend on a replacement for Adebayor and on a class centre half. Otherwise you could easily lose out to man City this year.
The people writing the anti Wenger shit on some blogs are not interested in Arsenal at all – they are only interested in getting hits on their site to boost their egos and maybe some ad revenues.
Simple thing to do is not to visit them and stop talking about them and then they may ghopefully go away.
Great stuff – I love it when points in a blog are reinforced by some nonsense in the comments! Excellent, level headed stuff as always. Bring the season on…
Listen here, people like you have a habit of being found out!!!
If you ever do venture to the north east or outside london, (which i doubt) ,how about a meeting so we can talk things over!! If you knew anything about the north east you would also know all the mines have been closed down. We all work in I.T. and work in brand spanking new business centres. Call centres, we also have a thriving Nissan car plant. Oh, and in case you did not know, Sunderland have a history stretching back to 1879 and have won the First division, now called the Premier League only the small matter of 6 times!!!!
typical southern tosser.
Just as response to David, the whole net asset value argument, as well as being unsubstantiated tosh, is also factually wrong. All players are stated on the balance sheet as assets – it would be illegal not to. As for the whole "greedy shareholders pocketing all the money" argument, Arsenal don't even pay dividends (unlike many other clubs), and the only shareholder who wants to drain the club by paying dividends is that convictive fraudster so beloved of the bedwetters.
