History suggests we could cock this right up – let’s put Hull to the sword
With nothing better to do, I decided to peruse Arsenal’s old fixture lists from seasons past. The 2007-08 season was one of the first on my mind: a season we really could, and should, have won the title.
On that fateful day, February 23, a mentally battered Arsenal succumbed late-on to draw 2-2 away at Birmingham. We followed this up with a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, at home, then after our AC Milan heroics, drew 0-0 with Wigan away, 1-1 with Boro at home, and eventually 1-1 against Liverpool at home.
Compare those run of fixtures (which also had a loss at Chelsea and a win at Bolton), with the ones we have coming up.
The trips to
Wigan and
Birmingham are coming soon, just as they were in 2008. For Boro at home, sub in
Wolves in April. For Aston Villa’s trip to the Emirates, in come
West Ham instead. A stern trip to Bolton two years ago can be seen as ferocious decider at White Hart Lane. Or perhaps, even tonight’s game at KC Stadium, against Hull.
A bit of poetic licence used here and there, but hopefully you get the picture. It’s all to reiterate that no fixture in the league is ever easy. Alex Ferguson will make sure to remind us when the mind-games come thick and fast. It’s better to just already think that, and pump up the determination factor.
We’re short of a number of players tonight, with Cesc and Gallas still out, plus Rosicky, Campbell, Sagna suffering niggles. Song sits out with the last game of suspension, too.
If anything, this should hopefully ensure against any complacency – we’re without some of our leading lights, so it’s time to roll up the sleeves, get in there and do the business. If Arshavin plays half as well as he did against Porto, Hull will be weeping, and young Theo must keep mixing it up as he was trying to do mid-week.
Bendtner does not necessarily have to keep his scoring streak going (though it would be nice!) but if he holds the line as well as he has for the past few, we’re in with a shout. Nasri will do the playmaker thing, Diaby box-to-box, and Denilson better have his running shoes on, as there’s ground to cover.
I have full confidence in the improving Clichy and Almunia as well as an in-form Eboue, and Silvestre is a good centreback when used sparingly, as he has been over the course of the season. He should deputise alongside the always-awesome Vermaelen.
So as I said earlier in the piece, history shows that we can really screw up ‘easy’ fixtures. At the business end of the season, there is no such thing, and despite the handbags they’ve been flailing near little old ladies, Hull will be up for this relegation scrap.
Let’s get more of those early goals, force them to come at us, and pepper old Boaz with lots of shots on the counter.
It’s all about efficiency and getting the job done. Are our boys up for it?

Ahhh 4.30am, it is a special time, ohh to be…
I really fear for us today. Hull are playing for their lives and if things don’t go our way (quick).. we could let our heads go down and that’s when the shit starts. We need to play with conviction, desire and hunger.
Hello Gooners
First of all, great comparison with the upcoming fixtures and those of our last proper title challenge two years ago. Every team we face from now will scrap to knock us off and reinforce the usual message that our team cannot roll up our sleeves and come clutch in the run-in. Fabregas, Song, Gallas, Campbell, Rosicky, RVP, Ramsey, Gibbs, Djourou and Sagna. That is TEN players. Throw in a GK and that’s a proper 4-5-1 formation.
GK
RB Sagna
CB Campbell
CB Gallas
LB Gibbs
DM Song
DM Djourou
RM Ramsey
CM Fabregas
LM Rosicky
CF RVP
Look at that!
But I digress. We have to fight with what we have. Even though Denilson, Silvestre and Walcott are polarizing figures for Gooners (I would sell the first two and drop Theo if everyone was healthy), WE NEED TO FIGHT!
Arshavin, Nasri and Diaby to score. As we head in to the business end of the season, I expect Arshavin to carry the torch and lead us to glory. I believe he is one of three players in our squad capable winning the Ballon D’OR (Arshavin, Fab4 and RVP). RVP carried us in the beginning, Fab4 took the torch and did the business in the middle distance and Arshavin will take us over the finish line. He would make my all time XI.
He didn’t do much at Anfield last year. He scored four.
He didn’t do much this year at Anfield. He ripped the winner past Reina.
He didn’t do much on Tuesday night against Porto. He was involved in three goals.
Thatz fukin GREATNESS!
Cheers Gooners.
3-1 to the Arsenal!

Your comment is pure greatness, Meneurdejeu10 (I had to copy and paste that, sorry…)
I wouldn’t say Arshavin didn’t do anything against Porto. He made those goals happen and was active throughout the match. Everything else you’ve said, I agree 100%.
Nice to see you found time to write
good see you back
COYG!
in the opposing fixture before xmas we beat hull and pensioners drew and utd lost so would be nice if this happened again.
I don’t think the comparison is right at all -
All the same we need 7 wins and maybe a draw or two to have a chance, so today’s got to be a win imo (though don’t forget the draw at Burnley didn’t hold back a first resurgence)
Campbell is crucial I think (Sylvestre can play some home games if he has to not away against cloggers, they’ve got strikers too I like Altidore and Zaki and Vennegoor of Hesselink can both score)
they cant defend tho chris seen they sold turner they’ve been shocking
Thanks Jammathon
Chris- Agreed, Altidore is gonna be a big time player
– Their defending has been shocking at times. Players who can weave and create
(Arshavin and Nasri) rather than players who run in straight lines (Walcott) can hurt them
Antonio Valencia absolutely destroyed their LB
Antonio Valencia runs in straight lines, by my reckoning. I think either of Walcott’s pace or the afformentioned’s weaving will do the trick. At least, I hope it does.
nice post there
Nice commentor
. Thanks for reading.
almunia seems to be playing well lately, hopefully he keeps that up cause when he is not playing at 100% we always concede stupid goals, but none lately, denilson has to be improving now from game to game if doesnt want to be left behind, song, diaby, eboue, rosicky and nasri have all improved vastly from last season, and i feel his time may be up unless der is a major turnaround, still though after watching lyon vs madrid during the week,i think wenger should go all out to get the lyon and france keeper lloris before the world cup,he will cost a lot b4 june but after june i think his price will go up a lot,get that keeper please arsene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Lloris, but he’ll cost a mint. Almunia, as we’ve both said, has looked better since Fabianski’s nightmare in Portugal.
History suggest Phil Orange is a complete cunt and how nice a five-nil dropping would be,a man can dream cant he ??
